Vaden J. V Callister
May 16, 1927 - May 6, 2013
Vaden James Callister was born to Ernest Cameron and Cecile (Taylor) Callister and grew up on their farm on Callister Road southeast of Gresham. His childhood included fishing his way to and from West Gresham Grade School along the banks of Johnson Creek. A 1945 graduate of Gresham High School, he served two years in Korea with the Army of Occupation. After honorable discharge as an Army Staff Sergeant, Vaden returned home to marry his high school sweetheart, Jo Stone of Fairview, on November 10, 1948. Hired by Portland General Electric in 1954, he capped his 35-year career in the E M & C and Line Departments as Pole Yard Foreman and Helicopter Line Inspector. Known to his co-workers as V, he retired in 1989.
Vadens heaven on earth was the backcountry of Oregon, where he led his family and friends on countless adventures - fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, waterskiing and exploring. Vaden and Jo raised their family beside the Sandy River at Troutdale, and in their retirement moved to Damascus where they resided for more than 20 years. There they enjoyed a Mt. Hood view, a sunny garden, and a comfortable home base from which they made many motor home trips – winter visits to the Southwest and touring all the states except Alaska.
Survivors include Vadens wife of 64 years and their daughters Teri (Bill) Herzog, Nancy Buley and son Larry (Janene) Callister; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his brother Robert (Ruth) Callister of Gresham, and his sister Polly (Bill) Compton of Canby.
A celebration of life will take place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14 at Smith Memorial Presbyterian Church in Fairview. Burial at Troutdales Douglass Pioneer Cemetery will be private. The family suggests remembrances be made to a favorite charity, and kindness be shared freely in Vadens honor.
