'Little Women’ the musical comes to Centennial’s stage

Centennial High School continues performances of “Little Women” the musical at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 10-11, and May 16-19.

The adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s story was written by Allan Knee, with music by Jason Howland and lyrics by Mini Dickstein. “Little Women” follows the adventures of Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March as they grow up in Civil War America.

Tickets — $10 for adults, $8 for students 18 and younger and $5 for Centennial students and staff — are available through the box office at 6 p.m. the night of performances or by calling 503-762-7511. Centennial High is at 3505 S.E. 182nd Ave., Gresham.

East Gresham Community Information Fair planned for May 22

More than 20 exhibitors will provide community resources and opportunities at the East Gresham Community Information Fair from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, at Gordon Russell Middle School, 3625 E. Powell Valley Road.

The fair will cover topics including public safety, youth programs, transportation, code compliance, housing needs and veteran services.

Along with visiting exhibitors and participating in kids' activities, families will have the opportunity to interact with community leaders.

The event is free, with complimentary hot dogs and refreshments and a free shuttle from the Gresham Fred Meyer parking lot. There also will be raffle prizes for all ages. For more information, call Dick Schneider at 503-961-4104.

Family Fun Night May 31 at St. Therese

St. Therese School will host a Family Fun Night from 3-7 p.m. Friday, May 31, at the school at Northeast 132nd Avenue and Halsey Street.

Games, hamburgers and hot dogs will be available for $1. For more information, call 503-252-0511.

Glover named Head Start Parent of Year

Mt. Hood Community College announced this week that Landra Glover has been named the National Head Start Parent of the Year.

The mother of a 5-year-old son who is enrolled in a Head Start program, she serves as vice chairwoman of the Head Start Policy Council for the 11 sites managed by MHCC.

Glover has spoken about positive male involvement to numerous Portland area organizations, including MHCC’s Head Start program and Healthy Birth Initiative.

Glover’s book on the subject, “The Arms That Are Needed — Daughters Reflect on Fatherly Love,” features 37 interviews with women ages 16 to 83 who talk about their relationships with their fathers.

MHCC student finalist for award

A Mt. Hood Community College student is up for an award at the Portland State University Impact Entrepreneurs program’s Elevating Impact Summit on Friday, June 21. 

Glenda Maribel Alfaro Salmeron, of Mt. Hood Community College’s SEED program, is among five finalists for the Student Impact Award.

“We established these awards to recognize promising and noted change makers in our region who are seeking bold ways to make a large and lasting difference,” said Cindy Cooper, co-founder and director of Impact Entrepreneurs.

Alfaro finished second in the Clinton Global Initiative University’s Commitments Challenge at Washington University in St. Louis earlier this spring.
