An 87-year-old Troutdale man died after firefighters pulled him from his burning home Thursday evening.
Firefighters at 8:06 p.m. responded to a neighbor's report of a house on fire in the 3800 block of Southeast 302nd Avenue and were told someone was still inside, said Gresham Fire Chief Scott Lewis.
Upon arrival, firefighters saw heavy smoke and fire coming from the back door and back porch, and the windows were blown out, he said.
Firefighters tried to enter the house, but were forced back outside due to heavy smoke and intense heat. Crews used hoses to knock down the bulk of the fire enough for firefighters to re-enter.
Just 10 feet from the front door, firefighters found a man.
He was unconscious and not breathing.
Paramedics tried to resuscitate the man for more than a half hour and were unsuccessful. The fire department has not released the victim's name.
A medical examiner will determine the cause of death. The victim lived alone and his family was at the scene.
Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Two water tenders from the Boring fire department, and one water tender from the Sandy fire department responded to the fire, as did
four engines and one ladder truck from Gresham fire.
No firefighters were injured.
