A burglary alarm and quick police officers foiled two would-be burglars.
Sean Patrick Stebbins, 35, and Mark Alan Romero, 22, both of Gresham, are being held on allegations of second-degree burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary at the Multnomah County Detention Center on $10,000 bail each.Gresham police at 4:07 a.m. Monday, May 20, responded to an audible alarm that monitors a roof hatch at the Bi-Mart in the 2800 block of Northeast Hogan Drive, said Detective John Rasmussen, Gresham Police spokesman.
The first officer to arrive saw a man running from the area. With help from Troutdale, Fairview, a Portland canine unit and the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, police found two men hiding in separate locations within two blocks of the store. The men, identified as Stebbins and Romero, were taken into custody.
With the suspects taken care of, police called on Gresham Fire & Emergency Services, which used its ladder truck to lift officers to the store's roof. There they were able to determine the suspects had tried to break into the building.
"Unlike the officers, Stebbins and Romero gained access to the rooftop by scaling a wall an ill-advised endeavor," Rasmussen said.
