Winners of the Excellence in Journalism Awards announced at banquet Saturday
The Outlook brought home honors over the weekend, when the Oregon Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists announced winners of the annual Excellence in Journalism Awards during a banquet held in downtown Portland.
Reporter Mara Stine took a third-place award in the Science and Health category for her series on transplant recipient Shannon Lusby. The Gresham resident received her second heart transplant last year and traveled to California to meet her donors mother.
Former Outlook reporter Kristopher Anderson received a first-place award in the News Feature category for A Life Well Loved, an emotional accounting of the Heichel familys adjustment to life without their daughter and wife, Whitney.
And reporter Anne Endicott took third place in Business News with a story about a downtown Gresham business, Sugar Bees.
Endicott also received first and second place honors in the Profiles category for stories about World War II veteran Neil Swarthout and Oregons 2012 Substitute Teacher of the Year, Jerry Kalapus, respectively.
The Oregon/SW Washington Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is the oldest journalism society in the United States.
Annually, the organization recognizes the industrys best in non-daily journalism.
