Three newcomers join MHCC; six incumbents return to Centennial, Corbett, Gresham-Barlow and Reynolds boards
The face of local school boards and the Mt. Hood Community College Board of Directors is about to change following the Tuesday, May 21, election.
Mt. Hood Community College
Zone I
In unofficial election results in the race for Zone 1 of Mt. Hood Community College, Susie Jones won with a landslide 73.13 percent of the vote, or 3,748 votes, to Sharon Kay Barkers 25.46 percent of the votes, or 1,305 votes.
There were 72 write-in votes.
Jones is a retired Mt. Hood faculty member and president of the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival, while Barker is a retired city employee.
Zone 2
James Zordich, a retired museum curator, zipped past Ron Weisdorfer, a retired teacher, in the race for Zone 2 director.
Zordich received 69.75 percent of the vote, 1,665 votes, to Weisdorfers 28.15 percent of the vote, or 672 votes.
Zone 4
George Sonny Yellott, the sole candidate for Zone 4 who refused to speak with the Gresham Outlook and the campus paper, The Advocate, received 4,425 votes, with 261 write-in votes.
Centennial School District
Position 7
In unofficial election results, incumbent Ernie Butenschoen was re-elected with 57.33 percent of the vote in the contested race for Position 7 on the Centennial School District School Board.
Butenschoen, a retired middle school teacher in the David Douglas District, secured 2,081 votes to Jeff Nelsons 1,435, or 41.37 percent of the vote.
Nelson is the semi-retired owner of Nelson Wasp Control with experience as a campaign manager for county commission and legislative candidates.
About 3.14 percent, or 114 votes, were write-ins.
Corbett School District
Of the four contested races for Corbetts school board, three candidates captured their position in a landslide in unofficial results.
Incumbents Todd Mickalson, Charlie ONeil and Bob Buttke each received more than 60 percent of the vote, while newcomer David Gorman took 56.91 percent of the vote for Position 4.
Position 2
In the race for Position 2, Mickalson, an excavator and operator for Perfect Climate, Inc., held 61.04 percent of the vote, or 785 votes, to Nick Kerslakes 38.65 percent of the vote, or 497 votes.
Position 3
Charlie ONeil, a self-employed small-business owner, led by 62.35 percent, or 800 votes to Janet M. Ruddells 37.41 percent of the vote, or 480 votes, for Position 3.
Position 4
David Gorman, a senior program manager at AECOM Technology Corporation, led Carrie Evans, a senior paralegal at Green & Merkley, P.C., with 56.91 percent of the vote, or 725 votes, to 43.01 percent of the vote, or 548 votes.
Position 5
Rounding out the Corbett races, Bob Buttke, a small business owner, general contractor and project manager, led Karina Lande, a homemaker and mom, with 784 votes, or 61.73 votes to Landes 38.19 percent of the vote, or 485 votes.
Gresham-Barlow School District
Position 6, at-large
With unofficial results from Clackamas and Multnomah counties, Position 6 incumbent Dale Clark, a supervisor at PGE, trounced Alan M. Baird, a teacher in the Parkrose District, with a landslide 3,685 votes to 1,376.
Clark received 71.6 percent of the vote, while Baird held 26.73 percent and about 1.67 votes were write-ins.
Reynolds School District
This years races for Reynolds School District were marked by young candidates, including one teenager and one twenty-something.
Position 4
In the one contested race for Position 4, incumbent Joe Teeny, an Internet and fleet sales manager at Webb Autogroup, won with 55.99 percent of the vote, or 3,123 votes, to 19-year-old entrepreneur Jake Woolseys 42.31 percent of the vote, or 2,360 votes.
