Pursuit of wrong way driver ends in tazing, arrest

Police tazed and then arrested, a 25-year-old driver who tried to flee after he was reportedly speeding more than 100 mph the wrong way on Interstate 84.

At 12:37 p.m. Monday, June 3, Multnomah County Sheriff Officers responded to a wrong way driver traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 84.

by: CONTRIBUTED - EGAR VTORUSHINCallers to 9-1-1 reported a gray colored sedan with no headlights driving in the wrong lanes from Exit 16 at Northeast 238th Drive in Wood Village. More calls came in as the driver sped east in the westbound lanes past Troutdale.

At approximately 12:44 p.m., Deputy Ryan Biggs saw the gray colored sedan driving the wrong way on I-84 before exiting eastbound at Rooster Rock.

The driver was speeding at more than 100 mph, police said in a report.

Deputy Biggs followed the sedan, described as a 1989 BMW 525i with Washington license plates 558ZAZ, into Rooster Rock State Park.

The BMW then spun out on a grassy area and stopped.

The driver, Egar Vtorushin, got out of his car.

He was the only person in the vehicle.

Vtorushin initially complied with the deputy’s commands, but then jumped up and ran toward a nearby forested area.

Biggs chased Vtorushin on foot, caught up to him and ordered him to the ground.

Vtorushin again complied with Biggs, but again jumped up and ran behind a tree.

As Vtorushin attempted to rush at Biggs, the officer tazed the man and took him into custody.

Vtorushin was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center. He is charged with reckless driving, impaired driving, reckless endangering and attempt elude on foot.
