The Gresham Police Department will conduct a pedestrian-safety mission from 7-11 a.m.Thursday, June 13, near Centennial High School in the 3500 block of Southeast 182nd Avenue, to raise safety awareness through education and enforcing pedestrian right-of-way laws, said Lt. Claudio Grandjean.
Motorists must stop and yield to pedestrians waiting to cross a road or who are in the process of crossing. Motorists also must stop at all crosswalks when there is a vehicle already stopped in an adjacent lane.
Officers will use their discretion to determine whether to issue citations to those caught not following the traffic rules. The lucky ones will receive an educational brochure instead of a citation.
Funding for this pedestrian-safety detail is through a Building Safer Communities Grant and the Alliance for Community Traffic Safety. Additional safety missions near schools will be take place in September as the new school year begins.
