Clubs, restaurants to host acts for musical evening
The Gresham/Mt. Hood Jazz Associations "Adventures in Jazz" series in Historic Downtown Gresham continues Saturday, May 11.
These four bands will be jamming in the restaurants and cafes along Main Avenue. All shows are free and open to music lovers of all ages.
Tim Gilson Trio at the Asian Thai Bistro, 120 N. Main Ave., from 6-7 and 7:30-8:30 p.m. Gilson is an award-winning bassist, teacher and recording artist (timgilson.net).
Paul Mazzio at the Hoppy Brewer, 328 N. Main Ave., from 6-7 and 7:30-8:30 p.m.
Mazzio, previously with Woody Herman, plays trumpet, and his quartet features Gary Hobbs on drums, George Colligan on keyboard and Dave Captein on bass. Hobbs played with Stan Kenton for many years as well as Tom Grant. Colligan plays with Jack DeJohnette (paulmazzio.com).
Jeff Baker at Spinellas, 436 N. Main Ave., from 6-7 and 7:30-8:30 p.m.
Baker, one of the hottest vocalists in town, will sing with Kerry Politzer backing on keyboards, Dylan Sundstrom on bass and Jason Palmer on drums (jeffbakerjazz.com).
Better Than Street Racket at Sweet Bettys, 1000 N. Main Ave., from 7:30-8:30 and 9-10 p.m.
This band plays high energy jazz-funk with Bob Jacobs on keyboard, Russ Boyles on guitar, Skip Landis on drums and Susie Jones on saxophone (btsrmusic.com).
The series is part of the Jazz Association's effort to promote Jazz on the Plaza, which will take place Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Center for the Arts Plaza. The all-afternoon and evening event will feature student jazz musicians followed by well-known jazz performers in the late afternoon and early evening. The night will feature danceable music, and the fest will offer a beer and wine garden, artisans and food vendors with an East Metro flavor.
