SnowCap Community Charities still has space available in two free gardening workshops.
The first workshop Saturday, May 18, covers helpful hints for successful container gardening. The second class Saturday, May 19, is on pesticide-free pest control.
Both workshops run from 10 a.m. to noon at the SnowCap Community Garden site, adjacent to the SnowCap complex at 17805 S.E. Stark St., behind Rockwood United Methodist Church. Parking is free.
To sign up, call SnowCap Community Charities at 503-674-8785, ext. 19, or email danni@snowcap.org.
"These classes are designed for both novice and experienced gardeners," said Judy Alley, SnowCap's executive director. "The purpose is to provide gardeners the opportunity to learn to grow healthy, nutritious vegetables and other crops."
SnowCap also offers community gardeners free garden plots with raised beds, vegetable seeds, water and gardening tools.
"This program provides a food source for neighborhood families, a positive social contact for different ethnic groups and a learning experience for neighborhood youth," Alley said.
SnowCap Community Charities is a philanthropic organization created to provide food, clothing, advocacy and other services to the poor in the communities of Gresham, Fairview, Wood Village, Troutdale, Parkrose and other areas of east Portland and Multnomah County.
