Trinity Lutheran Church will host a spaghetti lunch from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at the church, 507 W. Powell Blvd., Gresham.
The event is a fundraiser for the Jensen family, whose son, Grant, lost his left leg in 2012 after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma. In January, the family learned Grants disease has metastasized despite his chemotherapy treatments.
Grants mother, Erin, is a dental assistant at the Gresham office of the Multnomah County Health Department.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children. The event will include live music, a raffle and face painting.

Golf tournament held for triple amputee
Registration is open for the second annual Cpl. Jon Schumacher Golf Tournament at Mountain View Golf Course in Boring on July 13.
Schumacher grew up in Gresham, graduated from Centennial High School in 2002 and became a triple amputee in October 2011 during his second deployment to Afghanistan. He was profiled in a two-part series in The Outlook last summer.
The tournament is a fundraiser for Schumacher and his familys ongoing needs. He, his wife and their two sons, ages 1 and 6, live in Southern California.
Those who dont golf also are encouraged to attend the tournaments dinner.

Earth Day a success in Gresham
About 1,060 cars dropped off hard-to-recycle items during the city of Greshams 12th annual Gresham Earth Day Recycling Collection event April 20.
The event was organized by the Recycling & Solid Waste Division and garnered 110 volunteers from various schools and organizations.
Im always impressed with how many people stop by to bring us their materials and make a difference, Tristan Whitehead, business recycling coordinator for the city, said in a press release. We also want to make sure folks know they can make a big impact year round by reducing waste, such as bringing durable bags for shopping.

Tour highlights gorge gardeners
The public is invited to experience the beauty of nearly a dozen gardens in the Columbia River Gorge during the fourth annual Eastside Garden Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 18-19.
Sun Drops is a self-guided tour, directing participants to scenic points along the Historic Columbia River Highway, and includes a peek into the private gardens of residences from Gresham to Cascade Locks. The event is a fundraiser for the West Columbia Gorge Consortium, which conducts programs to promote the art, culture and heritage in communities in and near the West Columbia Gorge.
Tickets for the tour are $20 per adult. There is no charge for children.

Hospital seeking volunteers for cancer research study
Adventist Medical Center invites local residents to participate in a new long-term study that has the potential of changing the face of cancer for future generations.
The American Cancer Societys Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) needs men and women, ages 30 to 65, who have never been diagnosed with cancer. Volunteers will be asked to complete a comprehensive survey about their lifestyle and health, as well as provide a small blood sample during an event Wednesday and Thursday, June 12-13, at the hospital, 10123 S.E. Market St., Portland. Upon acceptance into the study, participants will receive follow-up surveys they can complete at home over the next 20-30 years.

Local politicians host town hall
Sen. Laurie Monnes Anderson, D-Gresham, and Rep. Greg Matthew, D-Gresham, are hosting a Healthy Communities Town Hall at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 23, in the Gresham Council Chambers, 1333 N.W. Eastman Parkway.
It's a chance to hear about more of the work being done in Salem, ask questions or give suggestions.
"We will discuss a whole range of issues affecting East County, from community safety to health and wellness," Monnes Anderson said. With the Legistature well into its 2013 session, Monnes Anderson said the town hall is an opportunity to be updated on how local representatives are trying to funding public education and career training, champion the n
eeds of small businesses and stand up for the middle class. "And as a nurse and chair of the Senate Health Care and Human Services Committee, I am also focusing on protecting vulnerable Oregonians and improving health care delivery," she added.
Model home gets addition for building safety month
The city of Gresham's Building Division recently received a second-floor addition for its educational, small-scale model home from the students at ACE Academy for Architecture, Construction and Engineering Charter School. The gift and installation kicks off May, which is Building Safety Month.
Building Safety Month raises awareness about creating safe and sustainable structures by focusing on the need for modern building codes, a strong and efficient system to enforce codes and a well-trained workforce to ensure public safety, said Laura Shepard, Gresham's spokeswoman.
This is the second year ACE and city of Gresham inspectors worked together on the model home. Last year, ACE students constructed the roof trusses for the model home. The small-scale home offers residents a chance to peek inside the walls, and under the floorboards of a typical home to see hidden pipes, wiring and other systems and to learn more about when and why building codes and inspections are required for safety.
City inspectors will be at the Gresham Farmers Market from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1, with the model home to demonstrate how building codes and permits safeguard public safety. Visit GreshamOregon.gov/BuildingSafety for weekly tips on building safety.
Auction to benefit local gallery
Residents are invited to attend the Soaring Hearts Silent Auction, to be held from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at the Infusion Gallery, 305 E. Historic Columbia River Highway, in Troutdale.
The event is a fundraiser for the gallery, which provides art instruction, workshops and events to help support artists with developmental challenges.
Guests will have the opportunity to bid on bird houses designed and crafted by gallery clients. The evening will also include food, wine and live entertainment.

Improvements begin on Halsey Street
Construction on street improvements for Northeast Halsey Street in Wood Village is scheduled to begin Monday, May 13.
The project completes improvements that were added in 2009 and 2010 between Birch Avenue and Northeast 244th Avenue.
Traffic will be limited to a single lane at times, with flaggers directing traffic in both directions. No road closure is planned during construction, but drivers should expect occasional delays on work days. On-street parking will be closed at times. Typical work hours will be weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Alternative east-west routes for through traffic include Northeast Glisan Street/Cherry Park Road and Interstate 84. Access will be maintained on Halsey Street for residences, businesses and emergency vehicles.
The project includes constructing sidewalks and curbs on both sides of the street, building out three traffic lanes (including a center left turn lane) and parallel parking on both sides, adding bike lanes and constructing retaining walls on the north side of the street.
Fairview expects the $474,000 project ,funded by Multnomah County, will be complete in August, depending on weather conditions.

A 30-second commercial produced by a group of local filmmakers will be shown as a benefit for Human Solutions at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, at East Burn, 1800 E. Burnside St., Portland.
The Holy Rascals produced the commercial, Occupy Love, to promote their message of justice and political awareness. Admission is free, with donations for Human Solutions accepted during the screening.
