Charles W. Chuck Riggs

Portland resident Charles W. Chuck Riggs died Wednesday, Dec. 12. He was 86.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at First Baptist Church, 224 W. Powell Blvd., Gresham.
Chuck was born July 7, 1926, in Boring to Randolph and Bessie Riggs. He was raised in the Portland area and married Geraldine Jerry Riggs June 21, 1947.
Chuck work in the retail industry and was a member of Gresham Baptist Prime Timers. He enjoyed woodworking and crafting.
He is survived by his wife and numerous nieces and nephews.

Patrick William Kern
Jan. 25, 1949-Dec. 9, 2012
Longtime Gresham resident Patrick William Kern died from diabetes Sunday, Dec. 9, in Grandview, Wash. He was 63.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Community Church of Sandy, 39290 Scenic St., Sandy.
Patrick was born Jan. 25, 1949, in Sioux City, Iowa, to William and Mildred Kern. A Centennial High School student, Patrick served in the United States Army during Vietnam and was awarded and number of honors, including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
He married Kathy Ann Petrak in October 1968. Patrick worked as owner and operator of Asphalt Services Paving Company and retired in 1994.
He attended Grandview Christian Church and enjoyed restoring antiques, sports memorabilia and hunting.
Patrick was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Joshua Irvin. He is survived by son, Richard Kern; daughter, Kimberly Irvin; brothers, Michael and Randall Kern; sisters, Koni Kern and Joella Kern; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Ernest Gottfried Bachofner

Longtime Portland area resident Ernest Gottfried Bachofner died Tuesday, Nov. 20. He was 87.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at Willamette National Cemetery.
Ernest was born Oct. 15, 1925, in Portland to Herman and Amelia Bachofner. He attended Benson High School before entering the Navy in 1943 and serving on the escort carrier USS Savo Island.
Ernest married Jeannie Rankin in 1947. He worked various jobs until he started with Portland Screw Company and worked as a purchasing agent for 45 years.
After having one son together, Ernest and Jeannie divorced in 1975.
Ernest loved playing pinochle, swimming in rivers and lakes no matter how cold it was and camping in his fifth wheel with his camper club. He volunteered for the National Kidney Foundation and was named its 1998 volunteer of the year.
Ernest spent 15 years with his life partner, Louise Lehl, taking many trips to tropical locations. He brought his famed pickle wraps to any celebration.
Ernest is survived by his brother, Herb; sister, Lillian; son, Fred; granddaughters, Allison and Kelli; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are being handled by Crown Memorial Center Milwaukie.
Len Zakula
July 12, 1932-Nov. 24, 2012
Longtime Troutdale resident Len Zakula died Saturday, Nov. 24, in Pendleton. He was 80.
A private family service and public memorial service will be held in January.
Len was born July 12, 1932, in Kinney, Minn., to Rade and Maria Zakula. He was always proud of his Yugoslavian ancestry.
Len was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Air Force in 1956 following his service in the Aleutian Islands. He married Patricia.
Zakula was the founder of Zakula Auctioneers, Inc., and past president of the Oregon Auctioneers Association. His auctions had attracted bidders from across the country and world.
Len was preceded in death by his son, Leonard Roy. Survivors include his wife and business partner; daughter Gayla Price, sisters Dorothy Bradford and Joanie Linden; two grandsons, four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Lens name may be made to Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp.
Alan L. Gunderson

Lifelong Sandy resident Alan L. Curley Gunderson died Monday, Dec. 10. He was 80.
A funeral service was held Dec. 17 at Sandy Funeral Home.
Alan was born Feb. 28, 1932, in Gresham to Alfred and Edna Gunderson. He graduated from Sandy High School, knowing someday he would be a carpenter. Â
While in the Navy, Alan married Nancy Conley. The couple made their home in Sandy and had three children.
Alan retired from building homes after Nancy died in 1980 and started a new career with Portland General Electric.
In 1982, Alan married JoAn Campbell. He served on the Sandy Planning Commission, was a volunteer firefighter, square danced, rode Harley Davidsons and lent his voice to karaoke at No Place Saloon.Â
Surviving are his wife; his son, Mark Gunderson; his daughters, Debbie Stone, Donna Harris, Sherri Profitt and Kristy Hargitt; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Sandy Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Donald Ray Coe
March 16, 1934-Dec. 1, 2012
Gresham resident Donald Ray Coe died Saturday, Dec. 1. He was 78.
Donald was buried next to his wife, Rosella Coe, at Forest Lawn Cemetery on Dec. 5.
Donald was born March 16, 1934, and spent much of his life in Gresham as the owner of DCOE Tool Repair Service.
He is survived by three children, Tonie Coe, Michael Coe and Renae Wiltshire, of Portland; two sisters, Jane Leathers of Sandy and Judy Hanson of Gresham; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Jacquie Mary Stuhl
April 17, 1956-Nov. 22, 2012
Former Gresham area resident Jacquie Mary Stuhl died Thursday, Nov. 22, from liver complications in Phoenix, Ariz. She was 56.
No memorial services are scheduled at this time.
Jacquie was born April 17, 1956. She attended Parkrose High School and graduated from Willamette University in 1978 with double bachelors degrees in psychology and sociology.
In 2002, Jacquie received her masters degree in education. She taught math for 17 years in Palm Springs, Calif., and enjoyed golf, tennis, warm weather and the National Football League.
Jacquie is survived by her brother, Scott Stuhl of Boring.
