Produce and plants and pastries - oh my!

Spring has sprung, with the opening of Farmers Market season

It’s a sure sign summer can’t be far away when open-air markets and plant sales make their annual debut, bringing farm fresh goods and stuff to make our yards look inviting.

Make the rounds this weekend and pick up a hanging basket or fresh-baked treat for mom for Mother’s Day.

Farmers markets

Gresham Farmers Market — 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Northwest Third Street, between Miller and Main avenues. Back for its 28th year, the market opens Saturday, May 11, with more than 110 vendors offering homegrown produce and plants, as well as food, crafts and live entertainment. The market runs every Saturday through Oct. 26.

Fairview Farmers Market — 3-8 p.m. Thursdays at 1300 Village St., in Fairview. This is the 11th season for the market, which features local produce, honey, free-range eggs, arts and crafts, baked goods and more. Live entertainment during the summer months.

Damascus Fresh and Local Market — 3-7 p.m. Thursdays, 19850 S.E. Damascus Lane. The market opens for its second season Thursday, May 23, with fresh produce, prepared food vendors, plants and handmade crafts by local artisans. New this year: cooking and food preservation demonstrations from Oregon State University Extension Service agents and other experts; free crafts for children; and live entertainment from area musicians.

Troutdale Open-Air Market — 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, Depot Rail Park, 551 E. Historic Columbia River Highway. Shoppers will find locally grown organic produce and foods, live entertainment and fine arts and crafts. The market is open rain or shine, year round.

Boring Farmers Market — 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. second Saturday each month, 28151 Highway 212. The market opens Saturday, May 11, for the season, with vendors offering kitchen items, jewelry, knitted scarves, stained glass and mosaic glass. A wine tasting and live entertainment are scheduled to kick off opening day festivities.

Plant sales

22nd annual Salvation Army Plant Sale — 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 11, East Hill Church, 50 N.W. Fifth St., Gresham. High-quality local nursery stock, including trees and shrubs for decorative landscaping. Plant specialists will be on hand to answer questions. Proceeds benefit the Salvation Army’s Gresham Corps and Family Services.

Eighth annual Benefit Plant Sale — 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 11, Trinity Lutheran Church parking lot, 507 W. Powell Blvd., Gresham. Large selection of plants and gifts just in time for Mother’s Day. Sale is a fundraiser for My Sister's House, an East County home from women and children in transition.

Petal Pusher Garden Club Plant Sale — 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 11, Covenant Presbyterian Church, 18630 S.E. Division St., Gresham. Annual sale offers trees, shrubs, vegetables, herbs, tubers, perennials, annuals, native plants, hanging baskets and more. Proceeds benefit the club’s support of local, state, national and world gardening as well as club philanthropic projects.
