Reynolds wins two of the first three races, but the Scots run away on the scoreboard
Reynolds put a few bumps in the road, but the David Douglas girls swim team had little trouble reaching its destination Thursday with a 119-50 home win over the Raiders.
Reynolds came away with three first-place finishes, but the Scots used their depth to outscore the Raiders across all 11 races.
Reynolds kept it close early when Abby Maricle wont he 200-meter freestyle (2:16.21) and Christy Hartenstein won the 200 medley (2:36.28). The Scots Pamela Kennedy held the lead halfway through the medley race only to see Hartenstein pour it on over the final two laps to win by several body lengths.
With Abby and Christy they have two of the best in the state, so it was good to get in some races against them, Douglas coach Jim Bowe said. A couple times were touched the wall first, and a couple times they got there first.
Douglas filled the next three spots in each of those early races to build a 10-point edge on the scoreboard.
The closest race of the day saw club teammates Elizabeth Fryer of David Douglas and Hartenstein of Reynolds battle side by side in the butterfly. Hartenstein led by a full second at the half-way turn, but Fryer surged to the finish line burying her face in the water to streamline her push for the wall. She came in at 1:11.72 .32 hundredths ahead of Hartenstein.
Thats exactly what we teach in practice for how to finish, and it was good to skill those racing skills come out, Bowe said.
