Barlow goes on a 17-point run in the third quarter to bury the Saxons in Thursday nights win
The Barlow boys basketball team continued to roll through the early-season schedule with an easy 71-53 home win over South Salem on Thursday night.
The Bruins took a double-digit lead into the locker room and put the game away by silencing the Saxons for almost the entire third quarter.
South Salem scored a layin on the opening possession of the second half, but would not find the basket again until the final seconds of the period when Collin Huun drove the lane for a three-point play.
Barlow outscored the Saxons 20-5 in the quarter, stretching its lead to a whopping 28 points when Andrew Olson beat the clock with a 3-pointer that rattled the rim and fell through the net as the buzzer sounded.
We played hard, good team defense and were able to get a good flow going, Barlows Jake Ellis said.
Barlow scored 17 straight points during the third quarter, starting on its first possession when the team passed the ball to all corners of the court before finding Ellis at the top for an open 3-pointer.
The defensive tone was set early in the period when South Salems Connor Fohn set up for a 3 from the corner, but took too long dialing up his shot. Barlows Kody Kennedy came in from the side and blocked the ball out of bounds, bringing the Bruins student section to its feet.
Barlow put the margin at 20 points midway through the quarter when Cooper Jewell crashed to the floor, but still managed to convert a layup off the glass.
The Bruins (6-1) moved into the top 10 in this weeks RPI rankings, heading into the Barlow Trail Classic holiday tournament beginning Thursday, Dec. 27.
