A toddler accidentally drowned early Saturday when he fell into a koi pond in his family's yard.
Officers with the Portland Police Bureau's east precinct responded to the home of Julian Brown, 1, in the 900 block of Northeast 160th Avenue on a 10:17 a.m. Saturday, June 1, report of the boy being found unconscious, said Sgt. Pete Simpson, police spokesman.
Portland Fire & Rescue and medical personnel immediately worked to save the boy's life and transported him to a hospital. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
The boy had wandered outside of the family's Centennial neighborhood home and fell into the water feature in the yard, Simpson said.
Neighbors told KOIN 6 News that the pond is 3-4 feet deep, and that the boy just celebrated his first birthday last weekend. He is an only child and recently learned to walk.
The Oregon State Medical Examiner determined that the death was an accidental drowning.
