Gresham High students aim to provide art supplies for those hurt by Hurricane Sandy
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy this fall, International Baccalaureate history students at Gresham High School had an assignment to somehow help people affected by the disaster.
Six of those students Arianne Melton, Angela Hahn, Jacelyn Davis, Andrew Delapaz, Devin Bailey and Joey Forrer were passionate about helping arts students and set to work on an art performance benefit.
We are all art students and very avidly involved in choir, band, art and theater, said Melton, a junior. Were passionate about how the arts help students and affect many parts of our lives.
From 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, the students will hold an arts benefit show with live music, dance and theater at Banaka and Browns Artisan Bakery and Coffee House, 835 N. Main Ave., Gresham.
Performances will feature students involved in Gresham High drama and theater, concert choir, Overtones choir and studio music and dance. The bakery will offer a 12-ounce Sandy Mocha and a Big Apple Scone for $5 in honor of the event.
Were wanting to get the community involved and raise awareness about arts advocacy we want as many people as possible filling that bakery, Melton said.
All monetary, school and art supply donations will benefit art students affected by the hurricane. Supply donations may include paints, crayons, markers and basic school supplies.
Students are still determining which school they will donate to and will research potential schools through Red Cross and their East Coast connections.
The students project is called PASSION, or Pursuing Arts Somewhere, Somehow In Our Nation. For more information, email passionarts.gresham@gmail.com or visit passionartsgresham.yolasite.com.
