Shooting is third possible gang shooting in East Multnomah County in just five days
A man who was shot on Thursday night also was struck by a hit-and-run driver while running away from the shooter.
Officers with the Portland Police Bureau's East Precinct responded to a 10:25 p.m. report on Thursday, June 13, of multiple shots fired on Southeast 148th Avenue just north of East Burnside Street, said Sgt. Pete Simpson, Portland Police spokesman.
There, officers found a man shot in the hip. He told police that as he was running from the gunshots, he was hit by a car that fled the scene without stopping.
A preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was with a group of people when several African-American males confronted them, Simpson said. One of the suspects pulled a gun and fired several rounds. At least two vehicles then fled the scene.
The victim was transported to a Portland hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Portland's Gang Enforcement Task Force is investigating the shooting.
It's the third potentially gang-related shooting to hit East Multnomah County in five days. A 21-year-old Portland man who is a documented gang member died Sunday, June 9, in a shooting in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 19100 block of East Burnside St.
As many as 17 rounds were exchanged late Monday, June 10, in another apartment complex parking lot in the 17700 block of Northeast Glisan St. Nobody was seriously injured but one woman was grazed by a bullet.
Gresham police also are working with the East Metro Gang Enforcement Team to focus additional resources on gang hot spots, such as popular gathering areas and hangouts, in hopes of preventing more shootings.
