The Huskies build a big third-quarter lead in their 49-47 win over Portland Lutheran
TROUTDALE The Open Door girls basketball team carried a double-digit lead most of the way Friday night, but found itself in a nail biter as the clock rolled under a minute.
The Huskies held a double-digit lead heading down the stretch only to see Portland Lutheran force a series of turnovers slice into the gap.
Ayde Alvarado swiped the ball at midcourt coming out of an Open Door timeout and passed the ball ahead to Danica Roady, who buried a deep 3 that left her pumping her fist as the Blue Jays clawed to within 48-44 with 0:40 on the clock.
Missed free throws gave Lutheran a last chance, but the Blue Jays needed a quick bucket. Instead, they got two misses before Alvarado hit a put back at the buzzer.
It was two points when the Blue Jays needed four, and Open Door held on for the 49-47 win.
Open Door took command of the game with a 16-point run in the first half, highlighted when Emily Sunderland connected on three straight shots capped by a 3 from the top of the circle. The Huskies biggest lead was 35-22 early in the second half.
