The Scots win 8 of 11 races to beat Centennial 89-81

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - David Douglas junior Raymond Miller takes a breath during his win in the 500-yard freestyle Thursday.

The David Douglas boys swim team avenged a dual-meet loss to Centennial last season by opening the 2012-13 campaign with a tight 89-81 win over the Eagles on Thursday.

The teams were deadlocked five times before the Scots pulled ahead for good after a dominating effort in the 200-yard freestyle relay. David Douglas was ahead by the length of the pool at the second exchange and won by more than 15 seconds for a 65-59 lead with three races left.

The Scots would seal the dual victory with another tag-team win in the 400 freestyle relay to end the meet — once again hitting the wall far ahead of the Eagles.

“We didn’t load up in the medley relay to start, so we felt pretty good about our chances in the freestyle relays,” Scots’ coach Jim Bowe said. “You always talk about staying focused on the end of the season, but this dual meet was a big one.”

David Douglas was in position to win after scoring first-place points in the first six individual races of the day. Lucky Le won the closest challenge, hitting the turn at the same time as Centennial’s Alex Bogdan before putting his head in the water and powering to the wall .35 hundredths ahead.

Look for extended swim coverage, including a recap of the girls meet, in the Tuesday, Dec. 18, print edition of The Outlook.
